Workshops

*Title: Interactive Notebook for the ESL Classroom

Description: Participants will create an Interactive Notebook and learn how they can implement it in the ESL classroom to build vocabulary, improve comprehension skills, and sentence structure.

 

*Title: Literacy Strategies for Primary English Learners

Description: This workshop will focus on literacy strategies and activities for English Learners in the primary grades.  We would like to present best practices in regards to differentiated graphic organizers, phonics and vocabulary activities, hands-on learning strategies, differentiated station suggestions, etc. We would like to provide samples of suggested materials.  Pictures or videos of suggested materials will also be used for demonstrations.

 

*Title: Second Language Acquisition Activities to Use in the Classroom

Description: Participants will be familiar with the six stages of Second-Language Acquisition and will have the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities to facilitate to our English Language Learners (ELs).  Activities will be differentiated according to stages. Participants will also be able to choose an activity to create and bring back to their classroom.


*Title: Using Technology in the Classroom: Reaching Students from All Backgrounds

Description:  Participants will learn how to use applications such as Seesaw (Learning Log), and ClassDojo (Classroom Management) in their classroom.  They will also have access to a list of useful links. This workshop is hands-on! Bring your cell phone and laptops, and learn how to use these apps.

Target Audience: ALL levels

*Title: Helping English Learners (ELs) Succeed in the Classroom: Implementing SIOP Strategies(Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol)

Description: Participants will have an overview of the SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) model. Hands-on and interactive SIOP strategies will be presented for teachers to implement with their EL students. SIOP strategies facilitate the development of English language proficiency while making content/ academic language comprehensible and meaningful.

 

*Title:  What do I do With New Arrivals?     

Description:  It can be overwhelming when brand new English learners first enter your classroom.  They speak little to no English, and you may feel a sense of panic. It's hard to know what to do first!  This session will provide research-based instructional strategies to teachers seeking to improve English Learners (ELs) instruction.  If you are a mainstream teacher trying to figure out how to provide language support for your new arrivals, you are not alone!  There are many ways to support ELs’ language acquisition, and we will provide great ideas to get you started.

Target audience: Grades 3-5

 

*Title:  Administrators Guide to Navigating Your ELs: Policy, Procedure, and the Law   

Description: Across our nation, rural, suburban, and urban school districts are enrolling English learners (ELs) in increasing numbers. As educators serving this diverse population, we need to know the laws, policies, and regulations governing the education of English Learners so that we understand what we are required to do and be able to explain these requirements to our students, their parents, our colleagues (both teachers and administrators), and the community in ways that are meaningful and accessible.  The intent of this professional development is to provide this explanation in a user-friendly way and describe how to navigate EL policy, procedure, and the law in our schools.

Target audience: administrators & teachers from all levels

 

*Title:  Challenges of Identifying LD and Language Development Issues for ELLs  by Dr. David Zera and Dr. Anne Campbell from Fairfield University

Description: Participants will learn how to distinguish if your English Learner students are struggling with second language acquisition or with a disability.

Target audience: administrators & teachers from all levels

 

*Title:  Language Acquisition vs. Language Learning

Description: Participants will learn methods and strategies on how to extend the first language to learn the second language implicitly in a general education setting through Learning Centers.
