Springboarding Emergent Readers: An Innovative and Differentiated Literacy Game System for Busy Teachers

Design a relevant and effective “Literacy Game Center” that will cover all identified literacy foundational skills that were scientifically proven to be consistent and related to students’ reading success.

Cultural Sensitivity in the Mainstream Classroom

Provide mainstream teachers with strategies, recommendations, and materials that will help make their English Learners feel welcomed and will ease their cultural shock.

Cantando y Jugando: Building Cultural Sensitivity Through Games

Focus on playing games, singing songs, and using interactive activities to build a stronger classroom community and to expand cultural awareness. Many of the songs and games are traditional songs and games from Puerto Rico but variations are well-known throughout Latin-American countries, as well. Although some songs are bilingual, most songs are in Spanish.

Why do we need to get it right? Special Education for Emergent Bilingual Learners

Understand the difference between the two troubling trends when it comes to identifying the services that EBLs need to succeed: over-identification for special education and under-identification, as well as how these can lead to an over-correction towards the other.

Administrators Guide to Navigating Your ELs: Policy, Procedure, and the Law

Know the laws, policies, and regulations governing the education of English Learners to understand what we are required to do and be able to explain these requirements to our students, their parents, our colleagues (both teachers and administrators), and the community in ways that are meaningful and accessible. The intent of this professional development is to provide this explanation in a user-friendly way and describe how to navigate EL policy, procedure, and the law in our schools. Target audience: administrators & teachers from all levels

Closing the Content/Language Gap for ELs

Examine strategies to support our diverse students as they develop an understanding of key content-area topics while also building literacy skills and strategies through collaboration. This "hands-on" session will explore a variety of methods for building deeper comprehension of content-area topics.
